Dark Skies and Stargazing in the Shropshire Hills

Sutton Court Farm is an excellent place from which to gaze at the night sky. It’s distance from major towns and cities combined with the shielding effect of the Clee Hills means there is practically no light pollution in the Corvedale. 360 degree views of the night sky afford a fantastic panorama of the major constellations and on clear nights the Milky Way is clearly visible in all its magnificence.

The Shropshire Hills AONB has a 4 ‘dark sky discovery sites’ as classified by the International Dark Sky Association, which accounts for half the sites so designated in the whole of the Midlands. Some of our cottages such as Barleycorn and Woodsage have velux windows in the roof which are perfect for stargazing in warmth and comfort! Alternatively you could brave the elements and get out into the night air with some binoculars for a proper tour of the night sky.

For anyone serious about stargazing a trip up onto the Long Mynd is a must. The National Trust also run astronomical events and talks throughout the year from the Carding Mill Valley cafe.
