Cycling and Mountain Biking Shropshire

Shropshire and Ludlow has endless opportunities for getting out on your bike both on and off road. We have places to wash and store bikes, please email or call us for info. Barleycorn has storage space inside the cottage in the hall. Bikes can be kept in the Information Room on request.

Mountain Biking

Although not as high profile as some other areas of the UK the Shropshire Hills have a long and distinguished history in the development of Mountain Biking. Bringewood, just outside Ludlow has hosted stages of the National Downhill Championship, and local legends Pearce Cycles put on regular uplift services at Bringewood, Hopton Woods and Bucknell Woods as well as organising the local race series.

There are miles and miles of cross country tracks right across the county and into Wales, as well as several excellent designated trail centres. More often than not you’ll have the trails to yourself!

Hopton Wood

The home of mountain biking in Shropshire, including the 12.6 km Pearce Cycles XC trail. There are also some blue trails for novice riders as well as black downhill trails.

Here’s a review of Hopton Wood from MBR website:

Bringewood

this area just outside of Ludlow has everything from hardcore downhill tracks to XC trails and more gentle rides for novices and beginners.

The Long Mynd

This legendary 11km long geological feature has many excellent routes and is particularly good for single track trails. You can start in Church Stretton and ride up the Burway to get to the top at Pole Bank, and then down Mynton Batch. Watch out for walkers (and sheep)!

Eastridgeand the Stiperstones

One of Shropshire’s most established mountain biking areas, Eastridge has been hosting events since the early 1990’s. It is one of the venues for the Welsh Gravity Enduro series. The Stiperstones is a rocky ridge and the second highest point in Shropshire after Brown Clee Hill. It is a nature reserve and a Site Of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) so please stick to the trails.

Road Cycling

The variety and quality of the scenery in the Shropshire Hills makes it an ideal destination for a cycling holiday. There are a number of excellent bike shops, including the famous Pearce Cycles a 10 minute drive (it’s our nearest shop!), who can hire bikes for the day or longer.
